The first three years of the Senior School at Jerudong International School are the 'Middle Years'. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are taught by Middle Years teaching specialists. They are provided with a challenging, vibrant and nurturing environment that enables each individual to flourish.

While the importance of academic education is emphasised throughout the Middle Years, our pupils are also encouraged to achieve their best in the areas of creative, social, physical, emotional, moral and spiritual development. We believe in promoting knowledge wherever it may occur, since this is the principle of a holistic education.

Curriculum

Middle Years Curriculum

All students across the Middle Years (Year 7-9) will study English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology (Food and Nutrition, Product Design and Textiles), a Language (Bahasa Melayu, Chinese, Malay, French or Spanish), Drama, Music and Physical Education (PE). This provides all students with the skills and knowledge to best prepare them for the rapidly changing educational and work environment they will experience.

When in Year 9, students will then need to opt for one language option (either a European or Asian language). Please note, Bruneian citizens applying for scholarships must maintain their study of Bahasa Melayu.

PASTORAL CARE

Pastoral Care

The aim of our excellent pastoral care is to ensure that every child reaches their full potential. At JIS, we care deeply about the wellbeing and happiness of each individual child. We work tirelessly to ensure that every student not only takes a full role in our thriving school community, but is also coached to ensure that they are equipped with all the skills necessary to succeed in the adult world.

Our House system allows students to make supportive friendships across a range of age groups. Each student stays in the same House as they travel through each year in the Senior School. Critical to this journey is the relationship that each child has with their Housemaster/Housemistress or tutor. This consistent partnership ensures that parents and children get to know the team that is looking after them exceptionally well.

Their tutor plays a pivotal role in the personal and social development of each student, not only providing regular PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education), but also forging close relationships in order to ensure that every individual has the support they need during this challenging stage of their development.

Our teachers play a central role in each student’s development by providing individualised pastoral care, academic mentoring, organisational help, counselling as well as guidance in the form of Higher Education and career advice.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Co-Curricular Activities

There are over 170 activity options on offer to Middle Year Students, from Debating to Diving, from Model United Nations to Masterchef, from Fencing to Forest School, from Chinese to Chemistry Club, and from Food to Fitness Training there is something for everyone! Especially popular are the performing arts and sports programmes after school!

Our school is all about developing the whole person and CCAs form a vital part of that process. Seizing the opportunities that are available is a big part of making the most of your chances of success in the long run.

UGAMA
Bruneian Muslim students (7 - 13 years old) are required to attend Ugama. This is the study of Islam and is taught in Bahasa Melayu. Ugama lessons take place after school, Monday - Friday. For further information, please click here or email to the Principal of Ugama on ugama@jis.edu.bn
