Junior School

Curriculum

The curriculum begins with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework from the UK for children in Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception and progresses into the UK Curriculum for children in Years 1 to 6. We offer an adapted curriculum that reflects the Bruneian context in which our children are living, enhanced with opportunities to apply their learning to make a difference in the real world, to look for and solve problems, develop strong values, dispositions and behaviours for learning that will support our students for years to come.

As well as their dedicated class teacher, Junior School students also benefit from a strong team of specialist teachers who offer a varied programme of Physical Education, Modern Foreign Languages, Art, Design and Technology, Information Communication Technology, Science and Music and Drama. In addition, English as an Additional Language (EAL) and learning support facilities are provided to groups of children, on a needs basis, in both mainstream classrooms and smaller groups. A very successful Intensive Language Programme (ILP) for students with little or no English is also available.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care is an integral aspect of life in the Junior School that not only ties in with the curriculum but also encourages students to develop their social and interpersonal skills, and make a positive contribution to the wider community.

The classroom teacher is always on hand to nurture and support Junior School pupils, offering guidance on both academic and personal issues. The PSHE programme (personal, social, health and economic education), supported by regular assemblies, encourages students to discuss any problems or social issues and come up with constructive solutions. Deeper thinking about issues takes place in our Philosophy for Children sessions where children engage a socratic discussion about a wide range of topics.

Strong peer and class support systems see older students team up with younger children to model good behaviour and offer guidance and advice. This not only provides positive role models for the younger children but also gives the older children an opportunity to develop their leadership skills. Good behaviour is positively reinforced through the Polio Points system.

Co-Curricular Activities

There are over 40 CCAs on offer to Junior School Students, from Lego Building to Swimming, from Jewellery Making to Masterchef, and from Ballet to Hip-Hop, there is something for everyone!

UGAMA

Bruneian Muslim students (7 - 13 years old) are required to attend Ugama. This is the study of Islam and is taught in Bahasa Melayu. Ugama lessons take place after school, Monday - Friday.
