Applying to JIS
Step 1: Apply Online
Fill out and submit the Application Form.
If you have an existing Open Apply account from a previous application, please use the same email login.
Step 2: Assessment Process
Our Admissions Team and a Senior member of Junior or Senior School will review your application.
The Admissions Team will then arrange an assessment based on your child’s age.

Junior School Assessments
Nursery and Kindergarten
Nursery and Kindergarten
If you are based in Brunei then you and your child will be invited to a Stay and Play session where you can meet the Early Years Team. Following this, you would meet with one of the Early Years staff together with the Head of Junior School or the Assistant Head of Junior School to discuss with you what level your child is presently at using the UK Early Years Foundation goals as a baseline. The Head of Junior School would make the final decision as to whether JIS would be the best place for your child.
Reception, Years 1 and 2
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
You and your child would meet with the Assistant Head of Junior School who will ask your child to show what they can do - reading, writing and Maths in order to assess your child’s present ability levels. They will discuss this with you. The Assistant Head of Junior School would make the final decision as to whether JIS would be the best place for your child.
Year 3

Cognitive Ability Test (CAT)
Your child will need to sit a 1 hour online multiple choice Cognitive Ability Test (CAT). This test has practice questions at the start of each section. This online test is not a curriculum test. It is actually a series of short tests designed to assess four different areas;-
- Verbal Reasoning Test – thinking with words
- Quantitative (or Numerical) Reasoning Test – thinking with numbers
- Non Verbal Reasoning Test – thinking with shapes
- Spatial Ability Test – thinking with shape and space
The reason for these tests is that we receive applications from children who have been educated in many different countries / curriculum across the world. This gives us a consistent way of comparing students from many different backgrounds.
* Please note, if you do not live in Brunei, it may be possible to arrange for your child to take the online CAT at their present school. Please ask the Admissions Team for more information.

Interview
Your child would meet with the Head of Junior School who will spend some time reading, writing and checking Maths in order to assess your child’s present ability levels. The Head of Junior School will also meet with you as parents to discuss this. The Head of Junior School would make the final decision as to whether Jerudong International School would be the best place for your child to continue his / her studies
Years 4-6

Progress Test in Maths (PTM)
In addition, your child will need to sit an online Progress Test in Maths (PTM). This takes about 1 hour but there is no time limit.

In addition, your child will need to sit an online Progress Test in English (PTE). This takes about 1 hour but there is no time limit.

Interview
The final stage of the Assessment process is an interview with the Head of Junior School. He will decide if an offer of a place at JIS is to be made.
Middle Years and Upper Years Assessments (Years 7-11)

2. Progress Test in Maths (PTM)
In addition, your child will need to sit an online Progress Test in Maths (PTM). This curriculum test takes about 1 hour but there is no time limit.

In addition, your child will need to sit an online Progress Test in English (PTE). This curriculum test takes about 1 hour but there is no time limit.
*Please note, it may be possible for your child to take the CAT, PTM and PTE at their present school. Please ask the Admissions Team for more information.
4. Bahasa Melayu Test (Bruneian students)
Bruneian students are also required to take a written Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language) test. This test is used as a class placement test if your child is offered a place in JIS. It is NOT part of the entry assessment into JIS.
3. Assessment with Specialist Teacher
It is occasionally necessary for a child to have a further assessment with the Head of English as an Additional Language (EAL) or the Head of Learning Support. This assessment would take place at JIS and usually will be during a school term time.
5. Interview
The final stage of the Assessment process is an interview with the Head of Senior School / Vice Principal or one of the senior academic staff. The Vice Principal will decide if an offer of a place at JIS is to be made.
Sixth Form Assessments (Years 12-13)
1. Grades gained in the IGCSEs in Year 11
Usually a minimum of 5 x Grade Bs is required at IGCSE to join the A' Level or IB Diploma programme. At least a Grade B should be held in the subject to be studied at A' Level or the IB – please refer to individual subject requirements in the Booklet. For students coming from an MYP or non UK academic background, we may require students to take subject assessments so that JIS academic staff can assess what academic foundation a student has in a subject.

3. Written English Paper (90 minutes)
For non first language English speakers. This test is to determine if the level of English will enable a student to cope with the academically demanding courses (A Level or IB Diploma) and also to see which English IB / IELTS group a student should be placed in.

4. Interview
The final stage is an interview with the Vice Principal (Head of Senior School) or a member of the senior academic staff to discuss subject choices and choice of course further.
Step 3: Admissions Decision
Required Documents
- A passport photo of your child
- Copy of your child’s Passport Information Page
- Copy of your child’s Brunei Identity Card (if you are living in Brunei and your child is 12 years in age or older)
- Copy of your child’s most recent school report
- Copy of supporting documents (e.g. Learning Support assessments)
- Health information - a health declaration will be required after the initial application, completed by a medical doctor
- Copy of parents’ Passport Information Page or Brunei Identity Card
