Pastoral Care

The pastoral system in Years 12 and 13 is designed to offer students a healthy blend of friendly support and professional guidance. Students benefit from daily contact with a tutor who provides a challenging, fulfilling and productive environment, working closely with the Head of Senior School, Pastoral Director and Head of Years 12 & 13 as well as the Housemasters and Housemistresses.

JIS operates a ‘vertical’ House system, which allows students to make supportive friendships across a range of age groups. As senior members of the school, Years 12 and 13 students have greater freedom and privileges as well as more relaxed relationships with teaching staff. Independence is encouraged and students are expected to respond constructively to the trust placed in them.

Students have the opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills by becoming a House Captain or through various initiatives such as the school’s ‘Be a JIS Hero Leadership programme. JIS also offers a structured and highly professional Higher Education and Careers Service, delivered through tutor groups and a team of specialist counsellors, as well as assemblies, PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education), one-to-one appointments and interviews.

Higher Education Provision

Students at Jerudong International School have excellent prospects of attending the very best educational institutions in the world. The school has a dedicated Higher Education (HE) team, with specialist counsellors (in Law, Engineering and Medicine) offering their valuable insight and experience to guide students throughout their university application journey .

Our expert team consists of experienced counsellors specialising in applications to universities in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Europe, and New Zealand. It also provides bespoke assistance for students applying to the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Ivy League institutions.

JIS Brunei also runs a series of events such as Careers Carousels, University Fairs, Guest Lectures and Higher Education Evenings, which offer students the opportunity to connect with visiting universities and take inspiration from illustrious guest speakers.

Students who wish to apply to university in the USA are required to have taken the SAT ot the ACTs. JIS Brunei is an accredited exam centre for both the SAT and ACTs, and runs courses during vacation time to prepare students for the test.

Co-Curricular Activities

There are over 300 activity options on offer to our Pre-University students. They range from Borneo Project to Debating to Diving, from Model United Nations to Masterchef, from Fencing to Eco-JIS, from Chinese to Chemistry Club, and from Food to Fitness Training - there is something for everyone. The Gold International Award (Duke of Edinburgh) is a well established and popular young leadership course.
